Best HVAC Tools for Any Job

When you call an expert to fix your heating or cooling system, it’s important that they come prepared. Some issues can be fixed with basic tools such as a wrench, screwdriver, pliers, etc. But many problems require specialized HVAC tools. Let’s take a look at some of the latest and most important tools an HVAC technician should have on hand.

Refrigerant leak detector

If the coolant is leaking from your A/C, not only will it force your system to work harder and use more energy, it’s also harmful to the environment. There are a number of different types of gauges that can find refrigerant leaks, but the latest are handheld digital devices which will detect it in seconds. There are similar devices for detecting gas leaks, whose quick discovery is even more vital.

Refrigerant scale

Once the leak has been fixed, you need to recharge your coolant to the appropriate level. A refrigerant scale is another digital device, which will tell you when you have exactly enough coolant, without going over (which can also damage your system).

Thermographic camera

Refrigerant isn’t the only type of leak that can cause HVAC problems. Air leaks in your ducts or around your home can drive up energy bills. However, an HVAC contractor can perform an energy audit to locate and repair these leaks. After first sealing the entire house and using a giant fan to suck out all the air, a thermographic camera can be used to find leaks. Using infrared imaging, it can spot differences in temperature which indicate air leaking out or leaking in.

Electric caulking gun

Once the leaks have been found, they need to be fixed. Fortunately, there are specialized HVAC tools for this too. An electric caulking gun can be used to seal holes in ductwork and other places. It dispenses sealant evenly, with no drips or waste, and is generally faster and more effective than a regular, non-powered caulk gun.
