Ways to Conserve Water in Your Home

Those of us in California who have experienced the severe drought of recent years know firsthand how important it is to conserve water. Saving water in the kitchen, the laundry room, the bathroom and outdoors not only helps mitigate the effects of the drought for our community and our state, but also saves you money on utility bills. Following are some easy ways for you and your family to save water.

  1. Wash dishes in the dishwasher. Dishwashers are much more economical than washing dishes by hand. If you do wash dishes by hand, don’t let the water run continuously. When you set the controls on the dishwasher, cut back on the rinsing.
  2. Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Whenever possible, compost vegetable and fruit refuse.
  3. Don’t run water over frozen foods to defrost them; you’ll save water and it’s also safer to defrost frozen food in the refrigerator.
  4. When you rinse fruits and vegetables, save the water for plants.
  5. Consider installing a tankless water heater near your kitchen sink so water doesn’t have to run so long to be warm.

Laundry Room

  1. Set the correct water levels for the amount of laundry you’re washing.
  2. Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible.

  1. Replace showerheads with low-flow models.
  2. Replace toilets with WaterSense models. WaterSense is the government’s label that assures you the fixture is economical to use.
  3. Instead of running water to wash a razor, stop up the sink and wash it in the basin.
  4. Don’t run the shower continuously when you’re washing your hair.

  1. If you have a lawn, leave lawn clippings on the grass to cool roots and retain moisture. Also adjust the mower blade so the grass is taller: taller grass will keep the roots cooler and lessen the need for moisture.
  2. Apply minimal fertilizer, as it increases the plant’s need for moisture.
  3. Look into replacing lawns with plants or landscaping that requires minimal water.
