Keep Your Family Cool the Easy Way — With Ceiling Fans and Reduced A/C

Southern California summers can stress your home cooling equipment as well as your energy budget. By combining your air conditioner with a ceiling fan, you can keep your home and family comfortable while trimming your energy use throughout the cooling season. Things to know about ceiling fans:

  • Using a ceiling fan improves the air circulation in the room where the fan is installed. The air currents provide direct cooling to your body while also helping redistribute cool air that has settled near the floor. A ceiling fan’s breeze will make you feel 3 or 4 degrees cooler than the temperature of the room. When you use a ceiling fan, you can turn your air conditioner up a few degrees and still maintain good comfort levels.
  • Larger ceiling fans produce more air circulation, as do fans with larger blades. In most cases, fans of 35 to 44 inches in diameter will be enough to cool rooms up to 225 square feet. Bigger rooms will need fans of 52 inches in diameter or larger. Big rooms may also need more than one fan for adequate cooling effect.
  • Ceiling fans usually have a switch that adjusts the direction of airflow. Make sure your ceiling fan is set to send airflow downward toward the floor during the summer months (counterclockwise). During the heating season, you can switch the blade direction to clockwise, to help redistribute warm air that collects near the ceiling.
  • In rooms such as offices or where loose papers or other material could be disturbed by the air from a ceiling fan, use a unit with longer fan blades. They can move more air at a lower velocity.
  • There should be plenty of clearance between the blades and the walls and ceiling. Ceiling fans are appropriate in rooms with 8-foot or higher ceilings. Blades should be 7-9 feet above the floor and a foot below the ceiling. There should be at least 18 inches of clearance between the ends of the fan blades and the walls.
