Comparing Air Purification Systems? Look for These 4 Factors

Along the California coast from Oceanside to North San Diego, inland valleys south from Encinitas to Poway, people are shopping for air purification systems. Even on those open window days, there are pollutants and toxins in the air and in your house.

Air purification systems should be compared on four important factors:

  • Particle removal: Look for an air purifier that filters large and small particles. You want to see MERV or HEPA mechanical filtration scores rated for their ability to trap and hold particles.
  • Efficiency: Systems routinely start well, but you want an air purification system shown to maintain its efficiency when it’s tested over the long-term. Efficiency is also a measure of maintenance, cleaning, replacement filters and electricity.
  • Filtration: HEPA filters with charcoal or activated carbon are the filters of choice for eliminating noxious odors. Look for the filtration efficiency in removing airborne particles; it’s scored by how airborne particle move through the filter. Check out the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) of 1 to 20.
  • Noise: Check the fan unit that comes with system. In a total house ductwork system, there’s very little noise, but you may want to listen to the single room model.
